Valerie Cober, Freelance Editor

Hello
I'm Val, the person behind White Birch Editing.
I've always believed that words can do more than communicate—they can teach, encourage, inspire, and change lives. Long before editing became my profession, I was drawn to work that helped people understand one another more clearly.
With a degree in kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, I had the privilege of advocating for survivors of brain injury and people living with complex rare disorders. Those experiences taught me that the right words don't simply convey information—they bridge gaps, build understanding, and make a meaningful difference.
After navigating some complex medical challenges, I found a new path in editing. I genuinely enjoy helping people tell their stories, strengthen their ideas, and share the work they're passionate about.
When I edit, my goal is always the same: to help writers communicate clearly while preserving the voice that makes their work uniquely theirs. I've learned that the best work happens when people feel supported. That's the experience I hope every client has with me.
When I'm not editing, you'll probably find me in my kitchen experimenting with recipes like maple-bacon apple-pie cinnamon buns. Or, during calving season, you'll often find me playing with the newest members of our small cattle and crop farm in Ontario.
Where White Birch Began
The name White Birch Editing goes back much further than my business.
Growing up, I spent many summers at our family cottage on the outskirts of Sudbury—yes, that's me beside the birch tree. My days were filled with swimming, canoeing, and picking blueberries. But my favourite memories have always been the quiet ones: curling up with a good book whenever the rain arrived, and fishing in the early morning as the mist drifted across the river beneath the birch trees.

Even now, living on a small farm, I still find that same sense of peace in nature. When it came time to name my business, I kept coming back to those mornings and how they made me feel: calm, welcomed, and full of quiet possibility. I hope White Birch Editing is a place where writers experience that same feeling of quiet possibility—where they feel welcomed, supported, and confident enough to let their words take root.
